LS swap and LS upgrade guide for Queensland

A plain-English guide to LS engine swaps and LS upgrades in Queensland: what to plan, why the tune matters, and where to check TMR modification rules.

Quick answer: An LS swap means fitting a GM LS-family V8 into a vehicle that didn't come with one; an LS upgrade improves an LS that's already there. Either way, plan the whole combination (engine, fuel, cooling, exhaust, transmission, wiring and engine management) and get it tuned on a dyno. In Queensland, engine changes and performance modifications may need certification by an Approved Person or TMR approval, so check the rules before you buy parts.

General information only, not legal or engineering advice. Rules change: always confirm with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) or an Approved Person.

Swap or upgrade?

  • Upgrade an existing LS (for example heads and cam on a 6.0, 6.2 or 5.7L): usually the simplest path to more usable power. Our LS head and cam package is $9,900 inc GST, fitted and tuned, all-inclusive; extras quoted.
  • Swap an LS into another vehicle: a bigger project with more engineering, wiring and paperwork. Talk to us first and we'll quote per job.

Plan the whole combination

  1. Engine and its condition
  2. Fuel system to suit the power
  3. Cooling
  4. Exhaust and emissions considerations
  5. Transmission, driveline and brakes
  6. Wiring and engine management (for example a Haltech ECU)
  7. Dyno tuning to suit the final combination

Queensland rules (check before you start)

TMR sets the rules for modified vehicles in Queensland. In general terms, TMR describes some engine changes as basic modifications, while engine upgrades, performance engines and forced induction usually need inspection and certification by an Approved Person under the Queensland Code of Practice (QCOP), and some swaps need TMR's individual approval. Don't rely on this summary: read TMR: Vehicle modifications and TMR: Vehicle modification codes, and ask an Approved Person about your exact vehicle. Also tell your insurer about modifications.

Why the tune matters

New parts change how the engine breathes and fuels. Tuning on our in-house dyno lets us set it up for the parts that are actually fitted, and check it under load before it goes back on the road.
