Why European ECUs take more work
Many European engine control units carry more security than a typical local or Japanese ECU. Reading the original calibration and writing a new one safely can take extra steps, extra time and the right access method for that particular controller. That is why a European ECU tune is priced separately from a standard tune.
Before we write anything, we read and keep a copy of what is on the ECU, then run the car on the dyno for a baseline. The tune is built and checked under load from there, so you can see the change rather than take it on trust.
Locked by a previous tuner?
Some tuners lock the ECU after they flash it, so nobody else can read or change the file. That is a problem when you move to the Whitsundays, buy a car that was tuned by someone else, or simply want a different workshop. A locked ECU can stop another tuner from adjusting the car for new parts, or even returning it closer to standard.
For a standard (factory) ECU that has been locked, we unlock it, then tune it on the dyno. Bring whatever you know: who tuned it, roughly when, and what was changed. If the previous tuner can supply the original file, that helps too.
Bricked ECU: stop and call us
An ECU can be left unable to start the car if a write is interrupted, the battery voltage drops during a flash, or the wrong file is loaded. If that has happened, do not keep retrying the flash. Each attempt can make recovery harder. Leave the ECU as it is and call us. Where we can recover a broken or bricked standard ECU, we do that first, then tune it.
If the car cannot be driven, ask us about getting it to the workshop. If the ECU has already been removed from the car, bring it in with the vehicle details.

Our Mainline dyno is 2WD only. Many European performance cars are AWD, so call before booking and we will check whether your vehicle can go on the dyno.
Can every locked ECU be unlocked?
Not always. We check the ECU and tell you before we go ahead with the tune.
