Aftermarket ECUs
Why an aftermarket ECU needs a proper tune
An aftermarket ECU such as a Haltech takes over the engine management from the factory computer. It gives full control of fuelling, ignition timing, boost and more, which is why it suits engine swaps, older cars being converted to fuel injection, and heavily modified engines. That control only helps once the ECU is calibrated for the engine it is running. A base map from the box or from another car is a starting point, not a finished tune.
On our dyno we run the car under controlled, repeatable load, work through the fuel and ignition tables and check the result before the car goes home.
Standalone or plug-in?
A plug-in ECU is made to connect to a particular vehicle's factory loom. A standalone ECU runs on its own wiring, which is common in swaps and race cars. Either way, the wiring has to be right before the tune means anything: poor earths, noisy sensor signals or a weak power supply show up as misfires and odd readings on the dyno.
Because we do auto electrical work too, we can look at the wiring when we check the car. Talk to us about install work when you book.
One car, more than one map
A multi-map tune puts more than one tune on the one ECU, so you can switch between setups, for example a map for one fuel and another for a different fuel, or a milder street map and a more aggressive one. A multi-map tune is from $3,200 inc GST.
