Why it matters

Towing and touring are hard work

A vehicle that tows a boat to the ramp every weekend, carries a camper on a long trip or drives corrugated roads to a work site wears differently from one that only does the school run. Many owner's handbooks list towing, dusty roads and heavy loads as harder operating conditions with their own service intervals. Check yours, or bring it in and we will go through the schedule with you.

Our logbook servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule. For a working or touring 4WD we also look at the things that take the most punishment: brakes, suspension, steering, wheel bearings, cooling system, driveline and tyres.

Power for the fridge and the lights

Dual battery systems, DC-DC chargers, lighting and accessory wiring are everyday auto electrical jobs for us. A dual battery setup that is wired properly keeps the fridge cold without flattening the starting battery. One that is not can cause voltage drops, flat batteries and melted connectors. We install accessories, lighting, batteries, dual battery setups and towing electrics so they work with the vehicle's own system. More on our auto electrical page.

Pre-trip check list

  • Service due? Get it done before a long trip, not after
  • Tyres, including the spare: tread, damage and pressures for the load
  • Wheel alignment after a hit or uneven wear: see tyres and alignment
  • Trailer plug, lights and wiring tested with the trailer connected
  • Battery and charging system tested, including the second battery
  • Cooling system, belts and hoses checked
  • Any warning lights read: book diagnostics

Tyres and alignment under load

Tyres carry everything: the vehicle, the load in the tray, the camper on the ball. Light-truck and all-terrain tyres that suit a 4WD still need the right pressures for the weight, and a vehicle that sits nose-up or tail-down with a heavy trailer can wear tyres and steering parts unevenly. After a big hit on a rock, pothole or kerb, or when you notice the steering wheel off-centre, get the alignment checked. We supply, fit and align tyres at the workshop: see tyres and wheel alignment. If you have changed suspension height or tyre size, tell us when you book, and check whether the change needs certification in Queensland.

Trailers, caravans and inspections

We do roadworthy and COI inspections at our own site in Cannonvale for light vehicles, heavy vehicles, light trailers and heavy trailers. If you are selling a 4WD or a trailer, or registering one, see roadworthy and COI inspections.

Thinking about a diesel tune for towing? See diesel tuning. Our Mainline dyno is 2WD only, which suits most part-time 4WD utes in 2H; constant-4WD vehicles need a call first.
